Create a family with Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)

Frozen Embryo Transfer is for those who have previously undertaken a cycle of IVF or IVF + ICSI. Speak with an advisor and we’ll figure out if it’s right for you.

What is a Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)?

For those who have previously undertaken a cycle of IVF or IVF + ICSI, your remaining embryos may have been frozen for later transfer. FET (Frozen Embryo Transfer) is the process of thawing and using these embryos in a new treatment cycle, without going through all the steps of IVF or IVF + ICSI.

The Frozen Embryo Transfer process

1
Ultrasound scans
Ultrasound scans will be carried out at your preferred location, to check that the uterine lining is ready for embryo transfer. When this happens, your embryo transfer procedure can be arranged.
2
Embryos thawing and selection
The frozen embryos are thawed and assessed for their suitability.
3
Embryo transfer
Once an embryo is selected, it is gently inserted into the uterus using a catheter, guided by ultrasound.
4
Ultrasound check
After the catheter is removed the ultrasound checks to see if the embryo has been transferred successfully.
5
You take a pregnancy test
Finally, a pregnancy test will be taken, usually around two weeks later. Our advisors will be there to discuss next steps following the pregnancy test.

More about FET

As the embryos will have already been created during IVF and frozen, FET means that initial ovarian stimulation is not needed. There are two ways that embryos may be replaced, depending on your age and fertility history. In every case, Apricity’s expert consultants will decide which treatment is right for you, whether embryo transfer during a natural cycle, or in a cycle with hormone supplements.

What are the success rates for FET?

Due to advances in freezing techniques, success rates when using frozen embryos are just as high as when fresh embryos are used. Embryos can be stored for up to ten years, and successful FET treatments are not dependent on the length of time they have been frozen.

What’s not included

The HFEA considers that there isn't enough evidence to support the efficacy of some "add-on" treatments such as time-lapse imaging or PGS, which is why we do not include them in our standard pricing packages. We also do not include non-routine tests such as Natural Killer Cells or DNA fragmentation, although if required we would be happy to arrange them for you at additional cost.

In some cases, your consultant may prescribe additional medications on an individual basis to address specific concerns, for example, preventing blood clotting.

Some of these may not be included in your treatment package and would therefore be subject to additional charges.

Pergoveris

Clexane and Aspirin

Trental

Steroids (eg prednisolone)

Thyroxine

Progesterone Injections (eg lubion or IM injections)

In some cases, the eggs or embryos will require a 3 month quarantine before being available for treatment. A repeat screening test is required at the end of this quarantine period for the egg donor. This repeat test is an additional charge.

Cancellations and refunds

If cycle is abandoned after day 10 scan and before Embryo Transfer refund due = £1500.

If cycle is abandoned after starting progesterone support medication refund due = £500.

Frozen Embryo Transfer FAQs

When does a frozen embryo transfer take place?

The embryo transfer will take place during your usual ovulation window. This is typically between day 17-21 of your cycle.

How long does frozen embryo transfer take?

The whole embryo transfer process takes 2-3 weeks. This dates from the transfer of the embryo to the uterus, to the date at which it is determined whether implantation has been successful. Learn more about

.

Does embryo transfer hurt?

Embryo transfer does not usually hurt, although it may be uncomfortable. The level of discomfort can be compared to a smear test. If you are concerned about the pain from frozen embryo transfer, please speak to your doctor ahead of the procedure.

How long after a frozen embryo transfer do you get symptoms of pregnancy?

If successful, you may experience early pregnancy symptoms in around two weeks. This includes fatigue, discharge, headaches, spotting, cramping, sore breasts, bloating and nausea.

What is the survival rate of thawing embryos? Will all embryos survive the thaw?

Generally, around 9 out of 10 embryos will survive the freezing and thawing process. Very rarely, no embryos survive. Sometimes, the embryos that survive lose a cell or two. As long as 50% of the original cells survive the thawing, the chances of success will not be significantly affected.

We will speak to you before and after the embryo transfer, and the embryology team will always be available to advise on the embryo quality which is about to be transferred.

Frozen embryos versus fresh embryos: which have better success rates?

Initially, fresh embryos were thought to have better success rates than frozen embryos. However, improvements in embryo freezing techniques have helped frozen embryo transfer success rates increase year after year, making them very similar to success rates with fresh cycles. According to the

, “patients can now be reassured that freezing their embryos gives them as much chance of success as having fresh cycles.”

Do embryos stored longer have worse rates of success?

Research around the storage periods is ongoing, but it is not thought that the amount of time that an embryo is in storage affects success. Embryos are stored at around -200°C temperatures and once frozen, do not change.
